Are They Dry? Supporting Toilet Training for Children with Additional Needs

1 hour 5 minute online training | For professionals and parents working with children with SEND

Toilet training isn't a milestone. It's a journey.

Are They Dry? is a practical and supportive training session, created for both professionals and parents, who are supporting children with additional needs on their toilet training journey. Whether a child is not showing typical readiness signs or has faced challenges along the way, this training offers clear guidance and realistic strategies to help move things forward.

What It’s About;

This 65-minute session reframes toilet training as a gradual, individual process that all children can begin. It focuses on recognising where a child is in their journey and how to support them at that stage, including pre-toileting activities for those not yet ready for full training.

You will learn how to:

  • Identify and assess a child's current stage in the toilet training journey

  • Use pre-toileting strategies to build body awareness, confidence, and routine

  • Understand common barriers such as sensory needs, communication differences, or inconsistent environments, and explore potential solutions

  • Develop a consistent, child-centred approach between home and school

Who Is It For?;

  • Early years practitioners and school staff supporting children with additional needs

  • Parents and carers preparing to toilet train at home

  • SENCOs, key workers, and inclusion teams

  • Anyone supporting a child who is not yet toilet trained and needs help getting started

Why This Training?;

Traditional readiness checklists often don’t reflect the reality for children with additional needs. Waiting for certain signs can lead to missed opportunities. This training helps adults feel confident and equipped to begin the journey, even when readiness looks different.

You’ll come away with:

  • A clearer understanding of where to start

  • Realistic, non-pressured strategies

  • Tools to personalise your approach based on individual needs

  • Ideas for strengthening collaboration between home and school

What You’ll Get;

  • 1 hour and 5 minutes of on-demand video training

  • A structured yet flexible framework for approaching toilet training

  • Practical tips and reflective prompts for both parents and professionals

  • Encouragement to take the first step, wherever the child may be starting from

Toilet training is possible;  progress starts with understanding where they are- and what’s next.
